What happened

Nvidia's RTX Spark superchip—an Arm-based system-on-a-chip combining a Grace CPU with up to 20 cores and a Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 cores—is entering production laptops announced at IFA 2026 in Berlin. Lenovo showed the Yoga 9n 2-in-1 (16-inch, 0.69 inches thick) with an OLED display, and the Yoga Pro 9n (15-inch, 0.66 inches thin) with an OLED display and up to 128 GB of memory. Competing RTX Spark laptops from Dell (XPS 16), Asus (ProArt P16), Microsoft (Surface Laptop Ultra), and HP (OmniBook X 14) are coming this fall. Mini PC variants—Acer's SFF RTX Spark and Asus' ProArt Mini PC—offer similar specs at Mac Mini size. Separately, Lenovo announced an AMD Ryzen Max+ Pro-powered ThinkCentre X Ultra desktop at an expected $3,699 base price.

Context

These systems are explicitly designed to run agentic AI workflows and full on-device AI models locally, reducing cloud dependence and enabling privacy-sensitive tasks involving financial data, emails, and personal information. The single-chip architecture with integrated GPU mirrors Apple's approach and promises better power efficiency than conventional discrete-GPU Windows laptops, though battery-life claims were not disclosed. The market is positioning itself against established premium alternatives: Lenovo's 16-inch model approaches MacBook Pro thinness, and the Yoga Pro 9n configuration reaches 128 GB of RAM—beyond typical laptop offerings but at premium pricing. RAM costs and system complexity are expected to keep prices high; comparable MacBook Pro configurations with 128 GB run $6,139, signaling the price floor for high-end local AI systems.
