What happened

NASA announced that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be stationed at Lagrange 2 (L2), approximately one million miles from Earth—the same orbital location currently occupied by the James Webb Space Telescope. Rather than remaining stationary at L2, both observatories will trace large orbits around the L2 point; JWST's orbit is much larger than the Moon's orbit around Earth. NASA stated that the two telescopes will be easily kept far apart through the wide orbital separation and efforts of mission controllers. Roman is designed for a primary five-year mission with a possible five-year extension, potentially lasting ten years or longer if it remains viable.

Context

L2 offers significant advantages over lower Earth orbit for infrared observatories: it allows continuous alignment with Earth as both orbit the Sun while minimizing fuel consumption, reduces thermal interference from Earth and the Sun, and provides an unobstructed view of a wide sky swath without Earth blocking observations. Unlike Hubble, which orbits at 300 miles altitude and has benefited from periodic servicing missions, both Webb and Roman operate at such extreme distance that in-orbit servicing is not currently feasible. However, Roman is designed to be refuellable, which NASA identifies as potentially extending the mission beyond its planned duration—a capability that becomes relevant given that fuel is expected to be the mission's life-limiting resource.
