What happened

WIRED's commerce and gardens staff tested multiple LED grow lights under real home conditions over months or years, evaluating them on usability rather than specialized horticultural metrics. The publication identified four categories of lights: a magnetic-mount 15-inch Vego light for seedlings and small plants that can daisy-chain up to four units and includes five preprogrammed modes (Seeds, Leafy, Fruits, Herbs, Microgreens); a versatile 2x3-foot light that hangs or stands with a remote dimmer; a high-output 100-watt Vivosun LumaLight panel designed for serious growers with fruiting and flowering plants; and a budget-friendly three-head clip light with timer and warm/cool lighting options. Staff noted that PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) matters less for casual houseplant owners than practical considerations: whether the light is disruptive, requires complicated installation, or can be easily knocked over.

Context

Indoor plants lose access to natural winter sunlight, and LED grow lights can replicate full-spectrum light and day/night cycles to keep plants healthy in dark spaces. The tester, who maintains 40 houseplants and multiple grow lights at home, emphasized that many grow lights serve similar photosynthetic purposes, making real-world usability the differentiating factor for household integration. One WIRED staffer's successful 138-out-of-144 seedling germinations demonstrates that even simpler grow lights can support practical gardening goals when properly applied. The range of options tested reflects varied user needs: from windowless corners and kitchen cabinets to serious indoor growing operations.
