South African Researchers Document Disappearing Indigenous Star Knowledge as Modern Telescopes Rise
A decade of interviews with San elders reveals that ancestral astronomical knowledge has largely faded over the past century due to colonization and modernization, even as advanced telescopes like MeerKAT and SKA-Mid are constructed in the same region.

Researcher Anton Binneman conducted ten years of conversations with 52 San indigenous knowledge holders across seven sites in South Africa, comparing their current astronomical knowledge to stories recorded in the late nineteenth century in the Bleek and Lloyd archive. The work, published in the Journal of Science Communication in August 2026, found that many indigenous star stories have been erased from cultural memory, though some elements with practical relevance—such as Venus known as "The Farmer's Clock"—retained staying power. Binneman used a Dialogical Knowledge Renewal Model combining archives, community memory, and modern science, rather than attempting to recover original versions of the lore. The research was conducted as part of an environmental and social impact assessment required for the construction of the MeerKAT and SKA-Mid telescopes.
