What happened

Elon Musk confirmed on Saturday that SpaceX has been building a 'blades and vanes foundry' on approximately 830 acres near its Starlink factory in Bastrop, Texas, acquired between March and June. According to reports, the blades inside a gas turbine's hottest section must be cast as single, unbroken crystals in vacuum furnaces at temperatures around 3,000 to 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit—roughly 800 degrees hotter than the melting point of the metal alloy itself. Musk stated the in-house casting capability could accelerate natural gas turbine deployment by up to 18 months. Currently, only four companies worldwide have mastered industrial-scale production of these blades, and all are at full capacity.

Context

The AI infrastructure industry faces a critical power shortage alongside GPU constraints. The International Energy Agency projects global data center electricity use will roughly double by 2030, and GE Vernova reports selling out production capacity through 2030 due to AI demand. Major hyperscalers—Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Microsoft—have pivoted toward private gas-fired plants adjacent to data centers to bypass grid delays. If SpaceX succeeds in this manufacturing capability, it would give a Musk-controlled entity an exclusive advantage in a critical bottleneck that competitors currently depend on a small oligopoly to access. However, this acceleration of gas turbine deployment occurs amid mounting health and environmental concerns: in Memphis, the NAACP has accused the company of operating turbines without required permits or pollution controls, with university research suggesting local air pollution worsened; in Virginia's Data Center Alley, a commissioned study using EPA models estimated that eight full-time turbines at a single facility could cause 3.4 to 6.5 premature deaths annually and $53–$99 million in health damages, with heaviest impacts on already-marginalized communities. The turbines emit smog-forming compounds and hazardous chemicals including formaldehyde, linked to asthma, respiratory disease, and certain cancers.
