What happened

In July and August 2025, MP Clive Lewis submitted parliamentary questions to the MOD asking whether the UK was cooperating with Five Eyes partners (US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. Minister Luke Pollard responded that the MOD had not participated in any international groupings specifically focused on UAP since May 2023. Lewis then asked whether UK cooperation with the Five Eyes UAP Caucus was ongoing, but rather than answering yes or no, Veterans and People Minister Louise Sandher-Jones referred him back to Pollard's earlier response. Lewis later told Dr Peter Skafish of the Sol Foundation that he had been "definitely misled," noting that Five Eyes members have openly stated they are working together on UAP. Subsequent released records show British officials Owen Rimmer and Annabelle Janes were included in correspondence coordinating an introductory briefing with the US Navy's Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force initially scheduled for 30 November 2021 and later moved to 8 December, and that a Five Eyes meeting on UAP occurred in 2022.

The discrepancy between MOD denials and documentary evidence of British participation in Five Eyes UAP coordination raises questions about the accuracy of official parliamentary responses and the scope of UK involvement in international UAP initiatives. Lewis's complaints touch on democratic accountability, as MPs rely on truthful answers to written questions to perform oversight. The released correspondence indicates UAP-related intelligence was circulating among Five Eyes allies even as the MOD publicly maintained it had ceased investigating the subject in 2009. This pattern suggests potential gaps between public statements about UAP investigation status and actual intelligence-sharing activities among allied governments.

Whether the December 2021 briefing between British officials and the UAPTF actually took place; records show it was postponed, but do not confirm whether it eventually occurred. A Five Eyes intelligence assessment of a 2021 RAF Typhoon encounter over Syria classified the object as UAP, but the assessment remains unverified and has not been released publicly; journalists citing the assessment said it did not confirm object destruction, while the RAF described it as a hostile drone that was destroyed.
