What happened
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope was successfully launched and is now traveling to its operational orbit at the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), a journey expected to take three months and cover one million miles. The telescope features a 300-megapixel infrared camera with a field of view 100 times larger than Hubble's, enabling it to survey the sky 1,000 times faster than its predecessor. It is equipped with a Coronagraph system designed to block stellar glare and directly image exoplanets, including small, old, and cold planets orbiting close to their stars.
Context
Roman will conduct surveys to map the distribution of dark matter using 3D scans and will measure dark energy's role in the universe's evolution through gravitational lensing.
