What happened

Tottenham Hotspur migrated its stadium's virtualization infrastructure from VMware to Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) solutions, reducing licensing fees by over 85 percent. The migration replaced VMware with HPE Morpheus VM Essentials (VME) and HPE OpsRamp software for hybrid and multi-cloud management, with HPE managing the service through its GreenLake platform. Tottenham's data center includes six aisles using HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 servers and Alletra Storage MP. The organization confirmed the move this week to The Register and is nearing completion of a broader stadium data center and network infrastructure redesign. Tottenham did not disclose which specific VMware products it used or previous licensing costs.

The shift reflects a broader reconsideration of hypervisor purchasing decisions among enterprise customers. Tottenham's CTO Rob Pickering indicated the timing aligned with the organization's replacement cycles and expressed criticism of VMware's market dominance and recent strategic decisions affecting both system integrators and customers.
