What happened

A fire broke out at approximately 16:00 on Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, in a grassy training area where infantry were conducting live-fire combat training with live munitions. The fire spread with extreme speed due to strong winds, covering a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds according to Maj-Gen Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division. Four service members died: Sgt Morgan Wong, Pte Shaun Farrell, Pte Aidan Goulding, and Pte Hayden Lykkemark. Of 39 people hospitalized, at least 19 are in critical condition. Authorities have ruled out terrorist activity and oil and gas infrastructure involvement; the cause remains under investigation, according to Rutland, with the investigation potentially taking at least a month.

Context

Wainwright is one of Canada's busiest military training bases, hosting approximately 690 military personnel and 300 civilian workers on a typical day. The base is located about 130 miles east of Edmonton and is a primary site for live-fire training exercises involving Canadian and allied forces. Prime Minister Mark Carney characterized the incident as "one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime." Healthcare facilities in Wainwright were reportedly overwhelmed by the number of casualties. Strong winds forecast for the region at the time, with gusts predicted up to 90 km/h, contributed to the rapid fire spread.
