What happened

Grok, in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, released seven minutes of AI-generated footage from an adaptation of 'The Odyssey,' which the company is framing as 'Episode 1 of our Odyssey series.' This follows Musk's July declaration that Grok would produce a full-length, 'historically accurate' movie version of the classical text. Musk had previously lashed out at Christopher Nolan's version of 'The Odyssey' because Nolan cast nonwhite and transgender actors.

Context

The release comes as Nolan's 'Odyssey' film, released in July, has become an extraordinary box office success with extended Imax runs and is positioned as a likely Academy Awards contender. The contrast between the two productions is stark: Nolan's version employed practical filmmaking across six countries with thousands of cast and crew members, while Grok's is entirely AI-generated. The projects embody different philosophies—Musk championing AI content generation and data center expansion, Nolan identifying as a 'techno-skeptic' who has stated he had never seen a technology 'so completely rejected by the public' before AI.
