The Pokémon Company restricts competitive tournaments at regional level and above to Switch hardware, though the mobile version of Pokémon Champions functions identically and has been downloaded tens of millions of times.

What happened

Pokémon Champions launched on Switch and Switch 2 in April, followed by a mobile version in June. Both versions offer nearly identical gameplay and cross-platform functionality. At the 2024 Pokémon World Championships, held at the Chase Center in San Francisco, the mobile version was not permitted in competition. As of September 1st, local tournaments may allow mobile, but regional-level tournaments and above remain restricted to Switch hardware. The game has been downloaded around 25 million times across both platforms combined, exceeding the total Switch 2 install base as of June.

Context

The restriction creates a competitive barrier despite technical parity between versions. Pokémon Champions producer Masaaki Hoshino cited superior graphics on Switch 2 and concerns about device fragmentation on mobile as reasons for the exclusion, though the Switch 2 price has increased and overall tech costs have risen. The rules handbook already provides for hardware provisioning by tournament organizers for streamed matches, suggesting a visual presentation concern rather than a technical limitation. Cross-platform play is handled server-side, making mobile-only play technically feasible; other Pokémon competitive games like Pokémon Unite already permit mobile competition at high levels. Mobile-only players can build tournament-ready teams within Champions without purchasing other Pokémon games, though an exclusive Pokémon (Eternal Flower Floette) from a forthcoming Switch title appears on winning teams. The restriction potentially affects players who own phones but lack budget for a Switch, a concern underscored by mobile downloads likely numbering in the millions.
