The genetic lineages most closely resembled Amelonado and Curaray cacao, both originating in the Amazon basin. The pottery came from pits containing animal bones and ceramics interpreted as remains of communal feasting during the construction of Etowah's first platform mound.

Because cacao cannot grow in Georgia's climate, its presence at Etowah demonstrates the existence of extensive pre-Columbian exchange networks capable of moving tropical goods across long distances in North America. This finding parallels an earlier 2009 discovery of cacao consumption at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico (1050-1350 CE) and extends evidence of cacao distribution farther east than previously documented.
