What happened

Microsoft launched its Disc-to-Digital feature to all Xbox users after beta testing with Xbox Insider members. The tool enables players to insert a physical Xbox Series X or Xbox One game disc into their console and claim a digital license tied to their Xbox account, allowing them to play without the disc afterward. The process involves pressing the menu button on the game tile and selecting "Claim Digital License" when supported. Digital licenses appear in the user's library with a new icon showing a disc "disintegrating" into bits of data and can be installed on the console's internal storage or external drives; Xbox One games can be played from an external HDD, but Xbox Series games must be installed on the internal SSD or an official expansion drive. However, not every game disc is supported—Microsoft does not publish an official list of compatible titles, and support varies unpredictably across first-party, legacy, and third-party games, with error messages providing conflicting explanations for why a disc cannot be redeemed.

Context

This feature arrives amid industry speculation about the future of physical media for gaming consoles. Sony announced plans to abandon physical discs by 2028, and Microsoft's next-gen console, codenamed Project Helix and described as a hybrid PC-console, has remained silent on whether it will support physical media. Disc-to-Digital may signal preparation for a disc-less future while providing consumers a path to digitize existing physical collections. The feature also opens a backward-compatibility route for users who upgraded to disc-less consoles but retain older disc-drive hardware. However, the program does not extend to Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs. PC players using the Xbox app can install their Disc-to-Digital games only if they are also included in Microsoft's Play Anywhere catalog, and the same limitation applies to Xbox Cloud Gaming.

What's disputed

Microsoft has not clarified whether keeping possession of the original disc is a permanent requirement for maintaining a digital license, or whether the license must be periodically renewed by reinserting the disc. The company also has not published an official list of supported games or explained the technical reasons why specific third-party titles are excluded.
