What happened

According to Wired, in July, Elon Musk criticized Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of Homer's Odyssey for diverse casting and deviations from source material, vowing that Grok Imagine would produce a "historically accurate" full-length version "before this year ends." A little more than three months later, xAI's Wonder Studios X released a seven-minute episode depicting Odysseus resisting a call to war but ultimately sailing to Troy. When queried about its historical accuracy, Grok's chatbot responded "No," stating the adaptation uses modern English with British accents rather than reconstructed ancient language, reflects modern cinematic tropes rather than archaeological evidence, and includes anachronisms like cavalry in Bronze Age battle scenes. Grok further noted that Homer's Odyssey itself is dominated by myth and invention rather than confirmed historical events, with characters having no basis in the historical record.

Context

Musk's criticism of Nolan's film centered on claims of historical inaccuracy as justification for objecting to casting choices and design elements. His stated goal was to deliver a version faithful to historical fact rather than artistic interpretation. The Grok episode's technical failings—mismatched facial movements and dialogue, stilted delivery, poor pacing—underscore the tension between Musk's promise and execution. Critically, Grok's own assessment reveals that the foundational premise of the project was misconceived: Homer's epic is a literary work of myth and imagination, not a historical document, making a "historically accurate" film adaptation of it a category error regardless of production quality.
