ICE agent Christian Castro was indicted on six federal counts for lying about his role in shooting a Venezuelan migrant in the leg on 14 January during Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota. The Department of Homeland Security initially claimed Castro fired in self-defence after being attacked by three Venezuelan migrants with a shovel and broom handle. Minnesota investigators allege Castro fired through a closed door into a home, with the bullet striking one person in the leg. Castro faces separate state charges in Minnesota for assault and false reporting; he was arrested in Texas in May, held for three months, then released after Governor Greg Abbott declined to approve his extradition.
