Krafton commits additional $250M to India expansion beyond gaming
The South Korean gaming company announced Friday it will invest another $250 million over three to four years in AI, robotics, and deep tech, doubling its total India commitment to over $500 million.

What happened
Krafton announced a new $250 million investment in India over the next three to four years, bringing its total planned investment in the country to over $500 million since 2021. The commitment is separate from a $670 million India-focused growth fund Krafton co-established with Naver and Mirae Asset in December 2025, to which Krafton will contribute around $137 million. The announcement followed a meeting Friday between Krafton chairman Chang Byung-gyu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where the two discussed closer cooperation in gaming, technology, and emerging sectors. Krafton said the new funds will expand beyond gaming into AI, robotics, and deep tech. The company has already backed approximately 18 Indian companies, including four to five gaming studios such as Nodwin Gaming, Loco, Pratilipi, and Kuku FM, and recently acquired Nautilus Mobile and launched KIGI Academy for game development training.
Context
India represents a strategically significant market for Krafton, offering access to over a billion internet subscribers and 700 million smartphone users. Krafton's India business was initially built around BGMI, a localized version of PUBG that has exceeded 260 million downloads, but the company has faced regulatory headwinds: PUBG Mobile was banned in 2020 along with Chinese-linked apps, and BGMI itself was banned in 2022 before being allowed to return on a trial basis in 2023. The new investment signals Krafton's confidence in India's market despite past disruptions, and the diversification into AI, robotics, and deep tech suggests the company views India as a platform for broader technology expansion beyond gaming. The timing aligns with high-level South Korean-Indian diplomatic engagement on technology cooperation.
