What happened

Michael Desronvil, the lone holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy trial, gave his first interview since the mistrial was declared on September 4. Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, admitted to strangling her three children in January 2023 but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. After seven days of deliberations, the jury voted 11-1 to acquit Clancy, leading Judge William Sullivan to declare a mistrial. Desronvil said he never had reasonable doubt about Clancy's guilt and that his Christian faith guided him through 38 hours of deliberations. He cited Clancy's methodical execution of the children and the emotional impact of the 911 call made by Clancy's husband Patrick as key to his conviction vote.

Context

Desronvil became the subject of intense scrutiny once his identity became known. Clancy's defense attorney Kevin Reddington claimed Desronvil 'stole seven weeks of the life of these other jurors' and that his client was 'robbed' by the holdout vote. The judge rejected Reddington's motion to override the deadlocked jury and declare Clancy not guilty. Desronvil said other jurors did not listen to him during deliberations and that decisions seemed 'swayed towards one way.' Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will retry the case. Desronvil reported being harassed by media at his home, including surveillance of his mailbox and windows, and said police had to escort his fiancée home.

What's disputed

Reddington alleged that Desronvil was biased against people with mental illness and made false statements in his jury questionnaire. Desronvil denied both claims, saying he answered the questionnaire truthfully. Desronvil also addressed a 2021 assault charge against his then-wife, which was later dismissed, stating there was 'no physical abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse.'
