Authorities in Tucson, Arizona are investigating a shooting outside Venture-N, a gay bar, as a possible hate crime. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday in the parking lot, where suspect Ousman Ceesay, 44, allegedly confronted and shot two victims: Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, 33. Ceesay sustained gunshot wounds and died after being transported to a hospital. Police found a note in Ceesay's possession listing several LGBTQIA+ associated businesses.

Context

The incident has raised concern within Tucson's LGBTQ+ community, with the mayor characterizing it as a direct attack on the community and a reminder of ongoing homophobia. According to a 2020 peer-reviewed study, LGBTQ+ people in the US are 2.7 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than cisgender, heterosexual people. The shooting recalls the 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida, in which 49 people were killed.
