What happened

OpenAI's venture capital arm and Founders Fund are investing in Coherence Neuro, a startup developing brain implants to detect and treat cancer, as part of a $45 million seed round. Coherence has already tested its implant in three patients undergoing brain tumor removal surgery at Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia this summer, with the device remaining in place for approximately 30 minutes before removal. The company is now testing recording and stimulation capabilities in seven additional patients and plans to launch a clinical trial for long-term implantation in glioblastoma patients. The implant is designed to detect electrical signals associated with brain tumors and deliver mild electrical stimulation to halt tumor growth, with the device expected to learn and provide real-time treatment over time.

Context

The investment reflects a broader convergence between AI companies and brain-computer interface developers, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's company Merge Labs also receiving $252 million in January to develop ultrasound-based brain decoding technology. According to Coherence's CEO, AI is uniquely suited for brain-computer interfaces because the neural datasets generated are too large for human analysis, making AI models essential for reading raw neural data and linking it to biological outcomes. Thiel's fund has previously backed Neuralink and CTRL-labs, positioning established venture capital behind the sector. Coherence has stated that OpenAI will not have access to patient brain or health data generated by the device, though OpenAI's arrangement with Merge Labs involves collaboration on scientific foundation models.
