ChatGPT Chrome extension gains ability to read and act on open browser tabs
OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT Chrome extension to allow the AI to view and perform actions across a user's open browser tabs.

What happened
OpenAI deployed new capabilities to its ChatGPT Chrome extension enabling users to tag Chrome and have ChatGPT read their open browser tabs. ChatGPT Work can "control" Chrome tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files, and organize or group tabs. The sidebar version of ChatGPT has been updated with "the full power of ChatGPT" and your entire conversation history in Chat or Work to use without leaving the page you're viewing.
Context
This represents an expansion of ChatGPT's integration into the browser workflow, reducing friction between the AI and user information by allowing it to directly access web content already open rather than requiring manual copying or linking. The capability to automate form-filling, data aggregation, and tab management across multiple pages streamlines repetitive browser-based tasks. This follows OpenAI's earlier discontinued ChatGPT Atlas browser product and positions ChatGPT as a more embedded browser assistant, competing with similar features like Google's Gemini-powered "auto browse" functionality.
