Workers at the Wikimedia Foundation voted on Thursday to unionize with the Communications Workers of America, with 158 ballots cast in favor and 14 against, according to the US National Labor Relations Board. The union contingent includes more than 200 employees across software engineering, finance, communications, and other functions at the 25-year-old, San Francisco-based nonprofit that employs nearly 700 people across 39 countries. The drive was motivated primarily by frustration over management decisions, including the disbanding of a team developing tools for volunteer editors and the removal of France from approved hiring locations for product and technology roles. Employees cited concerns about fear of retaliation for speaking up during internal meetings and a lack of transparency in personnel decisions. CEO Bernadette Meehan responded that management would work in good faith toward a collective bargaining agreement. The foundation has retained labor law firm Littler Mendelson, which is known for combating labor groups.

The unionization occurs as Wikimedia faces competitive and financial pressures: AI companies are scraping Wikipedia to train models, increasing server costs, while human traffic to Wikipedia declines as users turn to chatbots. Staff worry these trends could reduce volunteer contributions and content quality. The foundation, with an annual budget exceeding $200 million and $300 million in net assets, expanded its workforce significantly during the pandemic, introducing bureaucracy that workers say left them feeling powerless in strategic decisions. The union is expected to seek provisions including just-cause firing requirements. UK-based Wikimedia workers are also organizing separately and hope to coordinate with the US group. The outcome of contract negotiations will determine whether unionization meaningfully shifts how the organization makes decisions about its response to AI competition and organizational management.
