What happened

1Password announced a $300,000 pledge to become a "distinguished corporate patron" of the Omacom Foundation, the nonprofit that oversees Omarchy, a Linux distribution created by David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH). The announcement sparked immediate backlash from customers and internal employees, with some social media users calling for alternative password managers. DHH has published blog posts containing overtly racist comments, including a July 21st post titled "Wolves, sheep, and gypsies" in which he stated "When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them." 1Password CEO David Faugno and cofounder Roustem Karimov issued internal messages responding to concerns; Faugno stated the company "does not endorse hateful, dehumanizing, or exclusionary views" while also noting that Omarchy is the second-most-used Linux distribution among 1Password users. According to The Verge, the Omacom Foundation also received $1 million each from 12 "founding patrons" including Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Michael Dell, Jack Dorsey, and Shopify's Tobias Lütke, as well as $1 million from DHH himself.

Context

DHH's controversial statements are not new; in 2023, Duke University Libraries discontinued use of Basecamp, a DHH product, citing "harms perpetuated by the leadership of Basecamp's parent company, 37signals." At that time, concerns included DHH's attacks on DEI programs and Basecamp's banning of workplace political discussions. The timing and scale of 1Password's contribution appears driven by business considerations—Omarchy's significant adoption among the company's customer base—rather than ideological alignment. The funding decision places 1Password in a position of material support for a project associated with DHH despite his public statements, creating tension between stated values and operational decisions. The internal company discord suggests employee concern about the reputational and ethical implications of the affiliation.
