What happened

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe stated at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company plans to integrate AI agents from other companies—specifically naming Anthropic—into Rivian's electric vehicles in the future. Rivian has already deployed its own AI assistant allowing voice interaction with vehicles and has built an in-house agentic framework that routes user requests to appropriate vehicle systems, using either local edge models or cloud-based models depending on query complexity. As of May 2024, the agent could access external apps like Google Calendar. Scaringe emphasized that safety-critical vehicle controls—such as braking and steering—will never be handed to agents, and that significant technical coordination with AI labs will be required. The company declined to offer more details, pointing instead to a December "AI & Autonomy Day" event.

Context

Rivian has built its in-car software independently rather than relying on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, giving it control over how external systems integrate. The addition of third-party AI agents could extend the vehicle's capabilities to include services from frontier AI companies. Scaringe suggested this could enable drivers to access context from conversations with agents on other platforms—for example, asking the Rivian assistant to help with meal planning by drawing on prior discussions. This approach faces technical challenges: Rivian must enable secure data sharing with AI labs while keeping safety-critical systems isolated from autonomous agent decision-making. Tesla has already taken a similar step by adding Grok chatbot integration into its vehicles.
