What happened

NextEra Energy received a $1.9 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to refurbish the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa, which has been offline since 2020. Google announced last October it would revive the facility and plans to build up to six data centers nearby. The plant will be refurbished to produce 615 megawatts and is scheduled to restart in 2029. Deputy Secretary of Energy James Danly stated the restart will "drive down electricity costs," though he did not explain how. Only 50 megawatts of the plant's capacity will be reserved for the local power cooperative.

Context

The loan reflects a broader shift in how the Trump administration and tech companies are addressing electricity demand driven by AI expansion. Data centers are expected to nearly triple electricity demand in the sector by 2035, creating an urgent need for reliable power sources. Duane Arnold represents one of three major nuclear restart projects now underway: the Department of Energy previously extended a $1 billion loan to Constellation Energy for Three Mile Island (835 megawatts, scheduled 2028 restart), and Meta agreed to purchase clean energy attributes from Clinton Clean Energy Center (1.1 gigawatt). Shuttered nuclear plants are becoming the industry's preferred option to quickly provide clean, firm power without the price volatility that made nuclear uneconomical when the Duane Arnold plant was mothballed during a period of cheap natural gas. According to utility analysts, only one or two other candidates exist for similar revivals in the U.S., making these three plants the lowest-hanging fruit for meeting near-term capacity needs.
