ISO New England wind generation surges 68% in first nine months of 2026

Confirmed1 source · Oct 14, 2026

Rapid capacity additions are driving significantly higher wind output across the New England grid.

What happened

Wind generation in ISO New England averaged 68% higher in the first nine months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, with total generation reaching 4,619 GWh—1.9% more than all of 2025's annual total. Regional wind capacity increased 47% in 2026 to 2.5 gigawatts, following a 12% increase in 2025. Monthly wind generation peaked in September 2026 at 668.9 GWh, more than double September 2025 levels, and daily generation peaked on October 6 at 47.3 GWh.

Context

The rapid expansion of wind capacity in ISO-NE is translating into measurably higher electricity generation from wind resources, with consecutive years of double-digit capacity growth producing year-over-year generation increases. This suggests ongoing investment in regional wind infrastructure is beginning to materially alter the electricity supply mix in New England.
