Meta is conducting unreported trials of robots designed to perform physical tasks in data centers, including plugging cables, power-cycling servers, and swapping networking equipment, using hardware from vendors including Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB. One employee estimates a cable-swapping robot could replace 80 percent of some technicians' workloads if successful. Meta has also deployed a simple button-pressing robot at some facilities to remotely restart devices like Mac Minis. The company's senior robotics manager stated last year that Meta's long-term goal is to place robots in data centers for incident response, environmental monitoring, and preventative maintenance. Meta declined to comment on the testing but said via spokesperson Francis Brennan that the company is investing in training and hiring workers, asserting "we need more workers, not fewer."

Context

Meta operates the nation's largest data centers—including a major campus in Altoona, Iowa, which employs hundreds of workers and benefits from substantial property tax breaks—at a time when the company is dramatically escalating spending on AI infrastructure. The robots become feasible now because hardware costs have declined and AI models have improved sufficiently that they no longer consistently damage equipment during routine tasks, whereas earlier industry trials resulted in crushed servers. If adopted at scale, robots could reshape the economics of data center employment: some workers report Meta is simultaneously developing AI software to enable hiring of lower-skilled, lower-paid workers and centralizing roles in more financially advantageous regions like Denver. Longer-term, robots could eventually enable data centers to operate in environments inhospitable to humans—underwater, in space, or at higher temperatures in darkness. Worker group chats in Altoona have taken on a demoralized tone about job security. The issue has received little attention from anti-data-center activism movements, even as communities begin reconsidering tax incentives and regulatory frameworks for the industry.

What's disputed

Meta's actual hiring and training commitments are at issue. Meta contends its need for skilled workers remains robust and has launched a training program guaranteeing employment in several states for graduates. Two workers claim Meta is instead developing technologies to hire lower-skilled workers and reduce independent problem-solving requirements. Meta declined comment on these characterizations. The timeline and scale of automation adoption remain uncertain.
