China dominates second World Humanoid Robot Games, setting records amid technical failures
Beijing's robotics competition saw significant performance breakthroughs and widespread participation from Chinese institutions, but revealed how far humanoids remain from reliable real-world deployment.

The World Humanoid Robot Games, held this week in Beijing's National Speed Skating Oval, featured hundreds of humanoid robots competing in both athletic events and practical tasks. One robot completed a 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds, beating Usain Bolt's 2009 world record, while another achieved a standing high jump of 2.88 meters, nearly half a meter above the human record. However, multiple robots experienced failures including losing limbs, catching fire, and toppling into obstacles and judges' tables. Chinese teams dominated the medal standings, with AgiBot and Tien Kung each collecting more medals than nearly every other competitor combined. Of 666 registered teams, 641 were Chinese, representing 157 companies and 200 universities, while major U.S. humanoid makers like Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and Figure did not compete.
